Will a long-standing family feud keep Darcy and Elizabeth apart for the rest of their lives?
Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5
Source: I received an ARC of this book from the author for a fair and honest review.
Victoria Kincaid has done it again! Not only has she written a fast-paced “Pride and Prejudice” variation that’s a romantic page-turner; she’s also inserted quite a few humorous moments into her latest story.
“Darcy and Bennet” is the kind of JAFF variation that has taken some significant liberties with Austen’s original story by adding some elements from “Romeo and Juliet” and reimagining how Darcy and Elizabeth’s relationship could have played out very differently if Darcy’s father was still alive and there was a long-standing feud between Darcy’s father and Mr. Bennet, dating back from their earlier days together at Cambridge.
Our star-crossed lovers initially meet at a masquerade ball and are instantly attracted to each other. Darcy’s rather mean-spirited father has given him a deadline during which he must find a suitable wife to be the next Mistress of Pemberley. Yet, it isn’t until he meets Elizabeth at this ball and his heart is deeply affected by her, that he feels he may be on the road to finding a suitable wife. To his utter despair, after the ball, her identity remains a mystery to him and he is unable to locate her.
After a considerable amount of time, they reconnect with each other, and their attraction remains as strong as ever. However, after they realize that a feud that exists between their fathers, they know for certain that they can never be married to each other. Yet, fate continues to place them within each other’s paths and they must decide what they are willing to sacrifice in order for them to finally be together. Even if they can come to terms with their fates, is there anything their own fathers’ won’t consider doing in order to keep them apart from each other?
Once again, this was another book by Ms. Kincaid that I just couldn’t put down once I started reading it! Her plot was clever, her characters were great fun to spend time with and her dialogue is just as sharp and as engaging as ever. She spins terrific fun for us with our favorite supporting characters, such as Mr. Collins (think about that infamous proposal scene) and the great Lady Catherine de Bourgh, while she creates a father for Darcy who is unlike any of my ideas about him based on canon. He provides a good antagonist for this story and has a mean streak that even gives George Wickham a run for his money!
For my JAFF reading pleasures, I love when there are lots of tender moments between Darcy and Elizabeth that are wrapped within a story that maintains a steady pace and a consistent amount of even-handed angst. Ms. Kincaid’s newest story provides all of this while giving us quite a few new twists and curves. I highly recommend this story for all JAFF readers who are looking for a book that will bring them all of the above while effortlessly sprinkled with some funny and light-hearted moments!
From the pages of “Darcy vs. Bennet”
Elizabeth Bennet is drawn to a handsome, mysterious man she meets at a masquerade ball. However, she gives up all hope for a future with him when she learns he is the son of George Darcy, the man who ruined her father’s life. Despite her father’s demand that she avoid the younger Darcy, when he appears in Hertfordshire Elizabeth cannot stop thinking about him, or seeking him out, or welcoming his kisses….
Fitzwilliam Darcy has struggled to carve out a life independent from his father’s vindictive temperament and domineering ways, although the elder Darcy still controls the purse strings. After meeting Elizabeth Bennet, Darcy cannot imagine marrying anyone else, even though his father despises her family. More than anything he wants to make her his wife, but doing so would mean sacrificing everything else….
