How will Georgiana and Elizabeth meet the new challenges and responsibilities they both face during a year that finds them in unchartered territories?

Source: I received an ARC of this book for a fair and honest review.
In Sophie Turner’s latest book, “A Change of Legacies,” the second release in her “Constant Love” series, Ms. Turner reminds her readers once again why even Austen purists will find in their hands another sequel in her series that they will ardently love and admire. With her signature writing style, Ms. Turner continues to emulate Jane Austen’s style and tone, as she meticulously crafts a richly detailed and historically astute sequel that I believe even Ms. Austen herself would be curious to read.
After I read “A Constant Love,” which I selected to win a Just Jane 1813 2015 Reviewer’s Favorites Award for Best New JAFF series, I immediately headed over to Fanfiction.net to read Sophie Turner’s weekly installments of “A Change of Legacies.” Picking up right where Ms. Turner closed the final pages of her first book, “A Change of Legacies” takes us to Paris and to Derbyshire, where our two central couples find themselves acclimating to their new roles and responsibilities.
Back at Pemberley, Darcy and Elizabeth are eagerly awaiting signs that Elizabeth’s first pregnancy is safely progressing through its normal stages. During this time, the Bingleys are staying with them while their new estate is being built, leaving everyone at Pemberley seeking some solace on a regular basis from the overactive lungs of Elizabeth Bingley, their newborn daughter. But once they discover a solution to soothe the baby’s colic, a plan is put into place to restore peace, which also brings Mary Bennet to Pemberley.
Meanwhile, Sir Matthew and Lady Georgiana Stanton, now a newly wedded couple, decide to spend time enjoying Paris before Matthew, and hopefully, Georgiana, are deployed on a new naval mission. While they are in Paris, they decide to personally return a chest of goods left behind by Charles Durand, the deceased captain of the ship that Matthew captured during the war. Once the couple meets the captain’s beautiful French widow, Marguerite Durand, they eventually strike up a friendship. What they don’t expect is to play a role in bringing a new suitor into her life.
Yet things don’t all go completely as planned between Georgiana and Matthew, especially when they accidentally meet a dark figure from Georgiana’s past. As she finds herself suffering from bouts of anxiety coupled with frightening nightmares, Georgiana realizes that her married life will present a new set of challenges for her. Torn between receiving happy and unsettling news, the couple hopes to steer a happy course for themselves.
As the story shifts between the changes taking place in the Darcy’s lives and the Stanton’s lives, Ms. Turner also focuses her story on some emerging romances. In a very sweet turn of events, it’s the quiet and unassuming Mary Bennet who plays center stage here, as her visit to Pemberley brings her in her contact with a man she comes to respect and admire. Can the awkward, middle Bennet sister hope for a constant love of her own?
Additionally, the charming Colonel Edward Fitzwilliam returns from the service. Soon, he finds himself attracted to a woman that may not be considered a suitable choice for a second son. Will he decide to pursue the path that he has been planning to take or will love find him sailing in a new direction?
While capturing the precious, everyday moments in our characters’ lives, Ms. Turner also gives space and attention to the momentous events in her characters’ lives. “A Change of Legacies” takes us through a year filled with a variety of peaks and valleys in the lives of this close-knit family. As long-held dreams come to fruition, and others are painfully dashed away, it’s with a sensitive and skillful hand that Ms. Turner crafts this poignant sequel. It’s such a joy to experience the enduring love between Darcy and Elizabeth while at the same time watching them both mature into respected partners and close confidantes.
I found myself, once again, reassuringly pulled into the comforts of hearth and home, while also savoring the imaginative ways that Ms. Turner brings some rather dark and stormy events into her story. She creatively weaves a series of dream sequences inside of this sequel, treating her readers not only to a sequel that reads true to canon, but also incorporating these mini-dream variations that add another original dimension to her storytelling efforts.
Ms. Turner’s work as a researcher must also be touted here. She not only finds thoughtful and realistic ways to fold important historic events into her story, she does so in a way that keeps her readers engrossed in her story and engaged with her characters. Without feeling dry or monotonous, her story brings to life the elegance of the Regency era, coupled with the very real dangers and struggles that people met with on a routine basis. She has also included detailed family trees to outline the characters’ relations through July 1815 and several pages with the historical references that she used in her story.
I enthusiastically recommend this series to all JAFF readers, while at the same time feeling confident that readers who enjoy JAFF that aligns closely with Jane Austen’s story will feel a special bond with Ms. Turner’s series.
