How will the discovery of an abandoned young lady affect Darcy and Elizabeth’s plans for their own future?

Source: I received an ARC of this book from the author for a fair and honest review.
I was delighted when Lory Lilian informed me that her newest book was available for review, but in all honesty, I don’t even need to review this book for her readers… So many people have loved her debut story, “Rainy Days,” for the past decade; it’s the story that helped her earn her reputation as one of the reigning romance writers in JAFF. It’s also the very first book that I ever read by Lory Lilian, and like all of her other fans, I have looked forward to this sequel since she announced her plans to write one. In “The Rainbow Promise,” she takes her readers through the earliest days of the Darcy marriage and extends their story over the course of several months.
As readers travel to London with Darcy and Elizabeth, where they settle into their lives as newlyweds, there are plenty of opportunities for readers to indulge in the kinds of romantic scenes written for mature adults that Ms. Lilian is well-known for; scenes filled with plenty of intimate gestures of physical bonding, combined with intense emotional exchanges that intensify as Darcy and Elizabeth’s love strengthens over these earliest months of marriage.
Whether they are alone in Darcy’s study or in the privacy of their bedroom, these interactions between Darcy and Elizabeth are described in such beautiful, eloquent language that you can practically feel their mutual attraction develop within your own skin throughout their shared intimacies. What I also love about the way Ms. Lilian writes these scenes is that they are tastefully executed and that she continually finds new ways to express Darcy and Elizabeth’s love so that you never feel like you’re reading the same intimate scenes over and over again. Ms. Lilian’s writing talents really shine through during these lovely, private moments, such as ones like this:
“The next morning found Elizabeth sleeping soundly in her husband’s tight embrace, wearing nothing but the jewels he gave her and a trace of their shared passion,”
and as well as when Elizabeth bares her heart to Darcy, such as she does here:
“You are like deep, dark water. One must have courage to dive into it and search carefully to discover all of the beauty and kindness and generosity you are hiding.”
Once they settle into their newly established routines as a married couple, their lives become altered by a chain of events that take place after Darcy and Elizabeth discover an abandoned young lady named Maud, during a stroll together through the park. Uncertain about the best path forward, Darcy and Elizabeth attempt to resolve the situation to the best of everyone’s satisfaction, but they are soon blindsided by a daunting secret from Maud’s past. Once they uncover the identity of the person behind this secret and witness its effects on Maud’s life, will the hopes and dreams for their own future ever be the same again?
Throughout their time in London, and then upon their return to Pemberley during the first summer, the Darcys also experience many of the joys that we would hope for them to experience together as a newly married couple. There are balls and dinners and excursions in London, which also include plenty of interactions among a variety of supporting characters who exhibit varying amounts of respect towards the Darcy’s “unequal”marriage. Lord Matlock has learned the errors of his past prejudices towards Elizabeth, while Lady Beatrice and the Bingley sisters are as unkind and as spiteful as ever towards her. Ms. Lilian handles these interactions with a steady hand, and a tighter writing style, while she also inserts some lovely doses of humor into several of these scenes.
The adorable Becky Gardiner is also back and she’s as impertinent as ever! Readers will adore her unabashed admiration for Darcy and his dimples, as well as the way that she says whatever comes straight to her mind. Darcy and Elizabeth are also as enamored as ever with her charms and they continue to find ways to make her feel as special to them as they clearly are to her throughout this story.
My only quibble is in regards to the fact that the angst that Darcy and Elizabeth experience throughout this story were mainly developed through external conflicts; therefore, I missed the experiences of feeling more internal angst developing between them. As long as it doesn’t feel contrived, I enjoy when Darcy and Elizabeth are fiery towards each other, and I also enjoy the sparks that fly when they experience misunderstandings, as they frequently do throughout a good portion of Austen’s story.
Ms. Lilian’s fans will be grateful that after all of these years, she has taken the time to offer us this heartfelt and lovingly crafted glimpse into the happily-ever-after since “Rainy Days.” In this sequel, she has taken the theme of the “The Rainbow Promise” and woven it throughout her story in memorable ways. The epilogue, which takes us several years into the Darcy’s marriage, offers us a vivid and imaginative symbol of their love, which was kindled all of those years ago in a tiny, secluded cottage nestled in the woods of Hertfordshire. I will probably never look at a rainbow without recalling the eternal love between Fitzwilliam Darcy and his dearest, loveliest Elizabeth!
