A Jane Austen Jewel Box Novella
Elizabeth is newly married to Fitzwilliam Darcy, the richest man in Derbyshire, owner of a vast estate, and master of Pemberley House. Her new role is daunting at first, and having to deal with Mr. Darcy’s aunt, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, is a daily challenge.
But, Elizabeth is deeply in love and determined to rise to every test and trial she is forced to endure. When her husband presents her with a diamond ring, part of the precious and irreplaceable Darcy suite of jewels, she feels not only honoured and secure in her husband’s love, but also ready to accept her new responsibilities and position.
Mrs. Darcy knows she will face exacting scrutiny at the approaching Christmas Ball, but it will be her chance to prove that she is a worthy mistress, and she is excited to be playing hostess to the Bennets, the Bingleys, and the gentry families of Derbyshire, as well as Mr. Darcy’s French cousins. Antoine de Valois and his sister Louise have arrived at the invitation of Lady Catherine de Bourgh and Elizabeth is delighted that this young and lively couple are helping to bring Miss Georgiana Darcy out of her shell.
However, when her ring goes missing before the ball, Elizabeth is distraught, and her dilemma further increased by the threat of a scandal that appears to involve the French cousins.
I am not sure what drew me in more to reading this story; was it the compelling book cover with it’s hand-drawn renditions of Elizabeth Darcy and Pemberley in the winter or was it the fact that I knew it had to be a good story since it was written by Jane Odiwe? I suppose I should just say it was both that drew me into reading this holiday JAFF story for “The Twelve Days of Jane.”
“Mrs. Darcy’s Diamonds” is one of those stories that packs quite a bit of storytelling into a book that’s just under 150 pages. As we learn right from the start, Darcy and Elizabeth are at Pemberley, where they are enjoying marital bliss in the exact manner that I would have imagined for them myself. To show his love and admiration for Elizabeth, Darcy presents her with a ring that has been a Darcy family heirloom for many years. She can imagine nearly no other purest expression of Darcy’s love for her. Yet, when Lady Catherine gets a glimpse of her sister’s former ring on Elizabeth’s hand… well, you can just imagine how that scene plays out!
Low and behold, as Elizabeth hosts her first Christmas at Pemberley, she becomes disheartened when unexpectedly Lady Catherine appears at Pemberley to spend the holiday season with the Darcys and their other guests, which includes the Bingleys and Bennets, along with some French cousins, Antoine de Valois and his sister Louise, that are related to Mr. Darcy, and have been invited to Pemberley by Lady Catherine de Bourgh herself.
Just when the responsibility for such a treasured piece of jewelry seems a bit overwhelming for Elizabeth, she realizes the ring has gone missing and that two questions loom large in her mind; how will she break this news to Darcy and how will she rise above the condescending remarks Lady Catherine is certain to express when she realizes this precious ring is gone?
Facing her first holiday season as Pemberley’s new mistress, Elizabeth must find a way to manage her new role while meeting the expectations of her new husband. As she attempts to become better acquainted with Darcy’s French cousins, and as she’s facing the holidays with Lady Catherine, Caroline Bingley, and Mrs. Bennet all under the same roof, Elizabeth finds out that she just may have what it takes to be the new mistress of Pemberley!
Jane Odiwe has a nice way of capturing our dear couple during this holiday season and writing a story that has a dash of humor, a sprinkle of intrigue, and a cozy romantic tone that makes this story sparkle in its own special way. I enjoyed spending this time with our beloved newlyweds and found this to be an endearing and tenderhearted read that would bring a smile to a JAFF readers’ face during this special time of the year!
Jane Odiwe is a British author with a special interest in writing novels inspired by Jane Austen’s works. Her books continue the stories of beloved characters like Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy in Mr Darcy’s Secret, or tell Jane Austen’s own story, as in the novels, Jane Austen Lives Again, Searching for Captain Wentworth, and Project Darcy. Other works include the novels Willoughby’s Return, Lydia Bennet’s Story and the novellas, Mr Darcy’s Christmas Calendar, and Mrs Darcy’s Diamonds.
Born in Sutton Coldfield, England, Jane gained an arts degree in Birmingham where she indulged her great loves of Fine Art, Literature, and History. After teaching in the Midlands and London for some years, writing novels took over her life. Jane lives in London with her husband, children, and two cats.
Jane Odiwe comes to it steeped in Austen, in all her renditions; Odiwe’s sentences often glint with reflections of the great Jane …

Odiwe certainly writes a page-turning romantic mystery – her characters are intriguing and her narrative full of surprises and suspense. She blends historical fact and fiction with great style, and the settings are spot on in what the writer describes as her “love letter to Bath.”
