Will Love Rule the Day for Darcy the Werewolf?
Rating: 5 stars out of 5
With a full moon upon us this evening, there is no better way to start the day than by unraveling the mystery about how our very own Mr. Darcy became a werewolf!
When I read that Mary Simonsen had written the prequel to her very popular full-length novel, “Mr. Darcy Bites,” I decided the time was upon me to start enjoying this series. I can gladly say I have found another JAFF writer that I look forward to reading more of in the near future!
In this prequel, we meet a young Fitzwilliam Darcy, who is the victim of an unfortunate accident while traveling through Germany with his family. Now, he must come to terms with living his life as a werewolf for two days of every lunar cycle. While this new situation is challenging for Darcy in several ways, his family must also learn how to cope with his new condition. At the same time, the Darcy family must learn who they can trust to help Darcy survive as a werewolf, while also keeping this terrifying family secret from society at large.
The story then takes us to several years later, as Darcy is contemplating his next moves with Elizabeth, as he prepares for a visit to Rosings Park. We learn that he has previously spent time in Hertfordshire, amongst Elizabeth and her family and friends. Now, after receiving a letter from his cousin Anne, who has informed him of Elizabeth’s extended visit in Kent, Darcy must decide where to spend his upcoming days as a werewolf during the upcoming lunar cycle. Should he continue with his usual plans or risk going to Kent, where his identity as a werewolf may become exposed to others, including Elizabeth?
As Darcy comes to terms with his feelings for Elizabeth, he decides to test the waters to see how Elizabeth responds to him… But will he let her see the werewolf, the Master of Pemberley or both? His sister and cousins know how he feels about Elizabeth, but they aren’t certain about how Elizabeth will react to knowing about Darcy’s dark secret. Can love really grow where there are hidden truths or should Darcy stay his intended course, and choose a female werewolf as his mate?
Once in Kent, the story closely resembles the events of Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice.” Through the events of the book, we gain insights into Darcy’s struggles as both a werewolf and as a man in love, searching for the path to follow in his life. Should he lead with his heart, his head, or a combination of both?
I loved the roles of Anne de Bourgh and Georgiana in this story, as they became close confidantes of Darcy and Elizabeth throughout their unusual “courtship.” Anne is stronger in spirit in this story, than in Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice, yet she is still tender in her physical strength. Georgiana is a loyal and trusted sister, trying to help her brother navigate this difficult terrain.
I also enjoyed the novella, leaving the reader (along with Elizabeth) guessing about what will happen between Darcy and Elizabeth when she finally visits Pemberley. “What can you possibly say to me at Pemberley that cannot be said here?” Elizabeth asks Darcy. Stay fastened to your seat Elizabeth; because I’m guessing even your wit isn’t prepared for this turn of events!
After reading all three books in this series, starting with this prequel, I can confidently say that Mary Simonsen has given us a JAFF werewolf series that seamlessly connects these storylines and offers us a JAFF with an endearing romance, a suspenseful and engaging plot, as well as an unusual love triangle that had me laughing in all the right places.
Part werewolf, part gentry, this series does a wonderful job straddling between both worlds, offering historical insights and references to enjoy as we delve into the life of one brave and fierce werewolf. Could the perils of loving a human be as tumultuous as living as a werewolf? Once you start this series, you’ll be drawn into a world of moonlight, madness and romance…
