This was the first modern JAFF story ever read by this “Regency-era England girl,” and it had the fortunate effect of throwing me into the path of other modern JAFF stories. In the review I wrote on Amazon for this book back in July of 2014, I asserted that “Cat Gardiner does a great job with this story and her writing style is fresh and witty, so I do plan on reading her future P&P book(s),” and to date, I have read every one of her modern JAFF stories. She continues to this day to be one of the only authors of modern JAFF variations whose stories are an automatic read for me and downloaded to my kindle as soon as they are published!
When Cat invited me to meet her this week in NYC to celebrate the two-year anniversary of her first published JAFF story, Lucky 13, I was thrilled for the opportunity to both meet her in person and to visit some of the more memorable places in NYC from Lucky 13 through the eyes of her Darcy and Elizabeth. Rereading this story allowed me to remember why it made me eager to read more and more modern JAFF stories, which eventually made me branch out into reading alternate-ear JAFF stories, alternate character JAFF stories, and … You get the picture!
Poor Lizzy Bennet! She’s a beautiful young lady who’s a serious professional woman by day and a tempestuous, captivating, kick-boxing demon in the ring. When Fitzwilliam Darcy, part-time NYC firefighter by day, and brooding millionaire President of Pem Tech, as well as the founder of the charitable FD Burns Foundation by night, and sometimes it’s the other way around, meets her dual personas, he’s not only unsure about which one is really the true Lizzy, he’s also wondering why she’s so turned off by him!
Unbeknownst to Darcy, Elizabeth is on a mission to change her luck this holiday season, and she’s starting with changing her fates based on the unlucky 13 in her own life. Her goal is to find a date for her sister Jane’s upcoming wedding and live a little during this upcoming holiday season in NYC. But when she finds a rather significant typo in her newly published personal ad, it doesn’t feel like she’s anything but unlucky, once again!
NYC firefighter, William Darcy, has some dark secrets haunting his own troubled past, and with the recent passing of a colleague, this holiday season just became even worse for him. Acting more like a Scrooge, than a man who must be in want of a wife, he insults Elizabeth almost as soon as he meets her and the two quickly find themselves trading barbs with one another. Yet neither one of them can deny that a strong physical attraction exists between them and that this holiday season may steer their lives into a whole new direction. Throw in a dreamy NYC firefighter calendar fundraiser, a Yenta, and some matchmaking friends, and you have a JAFF modern variation that has a NYC heart and soul wrapped within this steamy and cleverly told “Pride & Prejudice” variation. Warning: firehose not included.
Elizabeth and Darcy were hysterical as their modern-day renditions. The misunderstandings and the various dates were romantic and had a bit of sizzle to them. Poor Lizzy … She couldn’t catch a break! But Darcy is adorable and the scenes between the two of them are really great, so of course, this winds up working in Lizzy’s favor. I also loved how current fashion trends were brought into the descriptions of the story and tailored to add those tiny little ah-ha moments when you can just imagine the way the characters appeared in various scenes. Cat cleverly added blog posts throughout the story, where we read additional insights and happenings from the story and she adds additional va-va-voom with her Lucky 13 and her Lucky 13 Audition Spotify Lists and Pinterest Boards. All of these additional features make the reader feel immersed within her magical holiday world and allows us to carry the story throughout the day as the songs for these lists are such wonderful musical selections.
I enjoyed all of the characters very much throughout this story and I loved the supporting characters too. The Bennett family, who reside in Meryton, Long Island, a fictional town based on my own beloved Long (Lawng) Island, was also a pretty funny cast of characters. I really loved the Jane and Bingley relationship in this story and the backgrounds developed for their characters too. Georgiana was great too, but really different from the Georgiana character in Austen’s story. Her relationship with Lizzy was also quite different. But hey, this is a variation and a wonderful one at that!Elizabeth and Darcy were hysterical as their modern-day renditions.
Whether or not you’ve read this story, this is the perfect time of year to celebrate the holidays with Darcy and Lizzy in NYC and join Cat Gardiner as she celebrates two years since the publication of this beloved modern JAFF story! You can also visit my own Lucky 6 post, where we gathered this week with Cat Gardiner to celebrate Lucky 13, NYC style.
