Today it is my pleasure to have Sue Barr visit Just Jane 1813 to share with my readers the behind-the-scenes process of creating the cover for her debut JAFF novel, Caroline. I love learning how authors select the final image for their covers, and Sue’s cover is no exception for me. The minute I saw this cover I was captivated by it, and when you read about her inspiration for this cover, I think you’ll see why she fell in love with this image too! Please join me in welcoming Sue Barr here today.
I’ve collaborated on three covers for my contemporary novels with the graphic artist, Rae Monet, who created my website, spending countless hours searching stock photos for just the right shot. Just the right couple. Just the right pose, and when I began searching for Caroline’s cover I worried about finding what I ‘saw’ in my mind. I have definitive ideas of how my cover should look. Finding regency style pictures is not easy.
I’ve always pictured Caroline as portrayed by Kelly Reilly in the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice and this is what I had in mind. Then I remembered a site called The Midnight Muse and I know the cover artist uses photos from Period Images (my favorite site for every era of Romance) and I checked out her pre-made covers:
When I came across the cover, which is now Caroline, I literally gasped. There she was in all her glory. Luscious red hair, green eyes, and her attitude jumped off the page. She said, “I’m beautiful and talented and I know it.” My only intent was to purchase that one cover, but there were two others that matched and I couldn’t let them go…
The minute I decided to buy these three covers, individual stories began to flood my mind. I had Caroline, Georgiana, and Katherine. I contacted Theresa, the cover artist and she also created the back cover for my print book. It’s a work of art and I love, love, love it! Funny thing, I never once wanted a cover with both couples on it. I can never find a hero that fits what I dream – other than my DH. That’s a given!
Thank you, Sue, for sharing this behind-the-scenes look into the making of your cover!
Whatever happened to Caroline Bingley after her brother and unrequited love interest married a Bennet sister? Join me in this story of redemptive love and the healing of broken dreams.
Caroline Bingley, beyond frustrated with her brother, Charles and Mr. Darcy both proposing to the Bennet sisters, dreads their upcoming nuptials. For three years, her sole focus has been on attaining a marriage proposal from one Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pemberley, only to be foiled by a country miss with ‘fine eyes’. Adrift and not sure of her place in life, she meets the mysterious and devastatingly handsome Lord Nathan, who equally vexes and intrigues her.
Lord Nathan Kerr, third in line to a Dukedom, had a well-earned reputation as a Rake. He cast all that and his noble title aside to become Mr. Darcy’s vicar in Kympton, finding contentment in leading his small flock and doing the Lord’s work. His plan for a quiet, country life is thrown into upheaval when he meets the fiery Miss Bingley. Can he reconcile his rising desire for the spoiled miss with how a vicar’s wife ‘should’ behave?
